Prescriber and therapist together

Most anxiety care needs more than one kind of help.

According to NIMH, treatment for generalized anxiety disorder typically involves psychotherapy, medication or both, and cognitive behavioral therapy has been well studied as the “gold standard” talk therapy for it. Finding a prescriber and a therapist separately can mean two searches and two intakes.

At Labyrinth, a psychiatric evaluation can lead to medication management and to therapy with a clinician on the same team. Follow-ups can happen in Cranford or by video.

About medication

What NIMH says about anxiety medicines.

NIMH lists antidepressants such as SSRIs and SNRIs, which may take several weeks to start working, and anti-anxiety medicines such as benzodiazepines and buspirone. It notes that benzodiazepines can quickly reduce severe anxiety, but some people build up a tolerance or become dependent, so they may be prescribed only for brief periods (NIMH).

Your prescriber weighs these with you at the evaluation and at follow-ups. Bring a list of anything you have taken for anxiety, including what helped and what you stopped.
