Who runs your TMS

A physician-led practice, not a standalone TMS center.

Dr. Salvatore G. Savatta has performed TMS since March 2017, first at TMS Centers of America, where his roles included medical director, and then in his own practice. In that time he has treated patients through several generations of TMS devices, protocols and approved uses.

Labyrinth Psychiatry Group is physician-owned and physician-managed. A physician stays involved in planning your treatment and supervises the course, from the first evaluation to the decision about what comes after the last session. TMS is one of several options the same team can offer, alongside medication management, psychotherapy and SPRAVATO, so the plan is not built around a single machine.

The commute, counted

Thirty-six round trips from Union, before traffic.

TMS works as a daily course, so the drive matters more than for a monthly visit. These totals multiply the OpenStreetMap route by every session in a standard course, with no traffic.

Making it fit

Plan the six to eight weeks before you start.

Sessions last 19 to 45 minutes, depending on the diagnosis, and you can go straight back to work. Ask the office for a standing time that fits your commute. See the route on OpenStreetMap.

Before you choose a TMS center

Four questions to ask, here or anywhere.

Is a psychiatrist involved in my TMS, and on site?

At some standalone TMS centers, a psychiatrist may not be on site. Ask who evaluated you, who supervises the course, and who you can reach if a session does not feel right.

Is the clinic actually near Union?

Several of the top Google results for “TMS Union NJ” on November 4, 2026 were directory pages for clinics in Clifton, Englewood and Montclair. Check the street address before you commit to five visits a week.

Who handles the insurance approval?

Most plans approve TMS before the first session and want records of the medicines and therapy you have tried. Ask whether the office files that request for you.

What happens after the last session?

Ask how progress is measured during the course and what follow-up looks like afterwards, including whether more sessions are possible later.

Who TMS is for

Depression that medicine has not relieved, and OCD.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, rTMS is FDA-cleared for treatment-resistant depression, OCD, migraines, anxiety with depression and smoking dependence. The FDA permitted a deep TMS system for OCD in 2018 (FDA). The full clinical picture, research results and side effects are on the main TMS therapy page.

Plans usually approve TMS only after medicines have not worked. A published Medicare policy, for example, looks for no meaningful improvement from antidepressants in at least two different drug classes and a trial of psychotherapy (CMS LCD L33398). The practice lists Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Medicare, TRICARE, UnitedHealthcare / Oxford.

Safety screening

When TMS is not an option.

The evaluation checks for anything that rules TMS out, including a seizure disorder, metal or electronic devices in or near the head, implanted heart devices close to the coil, head tattoos made with metallic ink, and conditions such as a brain tumor or a history of severe head injury.
