Depression treatment near Union, NJ, including when medicine has not worked

Why one practice matters

Depression treatment is often a sequence, not a single visit.

When an antidepressant or two has not been enough, some people are sent on to a separate TMS or SPRAVATO center. That can mean a new intake, a new team and a gap in care.

At Labyrinth, the psychiatrist who evaluates you can also offer those next steps in the same office. Labyrinth Psychiatry Group is physician-owned and physician-managed. A physician stays involved in treatment planning, and Dr. Savatta has offered TMS since March 2017.

The steps, in order

From the first evaluation to the advanced options.

  1. 01

    A psychiatric evaluation

A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner reviews your symptoms, your history, every medicine you have tried and why it stopped, and your safety. Bring that list. The plan starts here, not from a website.

  2. 02

    Medication management

If medicine is part of the plan, follow-up visits adjust it. These can be in Cranford or by telehealth.

  3. 03

    Psychotherapy

Therapists on the same team see adults for individual therapy, and the practice is taking new psychotherapy patients.

  4. 04

TMS, when medicines have not helped enough

Daily magnetic stimulation sessions in the Cranford office, with no anesthesia. Dr. Savatta has performed TMS since March 2017.

  5. 05

    SPRAVATO, for treatment-resistant depression

A nasal spray taken in the office under supervision, with at least two hours of observation and a ride home.

When medicine is not enough

What plans look for before TMS or SPRAVATO.

A published Medicare policy for TMS looks for a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, no meaningful improvement from antidepressants in at least two different drug classes (or side effects that stopped them), and a trial of psychotherapy (CMS LCD L33398). Commercial plans write their own rules.

SPRAVATO is approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression, on its own or with an oral antidepressant, and with an oral antidepressant for depression with suicidal thoughts or actions (FDA label). Either option starts with an evaluation. Compare them on TMS or SPRAVATO?

Union depression questions

What Union residents ask first.

Where can I get depression treatment near Union, NJ?

Labyrinth Psychiatry Group sees adults at 11 Commerce Drive, Lobby Floor, Cranford, NJ 07016, 5.3 miles from Union’s municipal building, and by telehealth for medication management and therapy. Call 908-336-1187 or send a request to start with an evaluation.

What does treatment-resistant depression mean?

Clinicians use it when standard treatment has not given enough relief. Insurance plans set their own tests; a published Medicare policy for TMS, for example, looks for no meaningful improvement from antidepressants in at least two different drug classes, plus a trial of psychotherapy.

Can I get TMS or SPRAVATO without leaving my current psychiatrist?

That depends on your psychiatrist. At Labyrinth, both are given in the same practice that evaluates you and manages your medication, so you do not have to start over with a separate TMS or SPRAVATO center.

Is Labyrinth taking new patients for depression?

Yes, for a psychiatric evaluation and for psychotherapy. Office staff call you back to arrange a time and tell you which clinician you would see.

Which insurance does Labyrinth take?

The practice lists Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Medicare, TRICARE, UnitedHealthcare / Oxford. NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) is not on the list. Confirm your plan with the office before the first visit.
